SUP Recap 9/14/2022

9/14/2022

Thank you, Jack, once again for a great recap. There were no hilarious errors in this installment, however, which was disappointing. Safe travels to camp today!

I would like to echo Jack’s appreciation for everyone who is stepping up more and more to help lead and shape the songs, and to bring new input. I have been leading the way in my scattershot fashion for several years now, not always knowing if my choices are good or bad. Without Jack I could not have gotten this far, and I don’t even listen to him half the time!. As we grow, he and I really do need more help. So never be afraid to give your opinions or  song suggestions, or volunteer to lead. There is indeed a lot of talent in this group, and we are going in a great direction.

I will plan to spend about 15 minutes or so at the next meeting, to go over our financial status, updates on plans for the rest of the year, and to entertain thoughts on what we would like to focus on going forward.

Have a great week!

Susan

Hi Susan

We had a great outdoor meetup on this beautiful day with 14 members in attendance and a couple of people in the audience.  It’s very hard to believe that we’re halfway through September.

Susan had the following announcements:

We were well received at the art show this past Saturday.

SUP Mashup this Saturday at the Kingston Rec.

Be there or be square.

Snhugfest Jamalong Dover, NH 9/24. We will be closing out SNHUGs annual festival. Please sign up on the SUP Meetup page.

Connect 55+ Concord, NH 10/13.  We’re still looking for players to join us. I’m sure some of us can carpool.  This is always a great time with this active group of residents.  Earlier in the year we provided a brief lesson and the residents joined along with us during our performance.

Atria Newburyport, MA 10/21.  This is a SNHUG event.  One of our member’s mom just moved in to the memory care side. Please help us show her our support.  The sign up for this is on the SNHUG meetup page.

Playshop at the Kingston Rec Kingston, NH 11/5.  There are two workshops and a performance by SUP in between. Please see either Meetup on Facebook for more information

With Maria’s help the Seacoast Ukulele Players now have a website. Is it still a work in progress but check it out when you have a chance. seacoastukuleleplayers.com

Big shout out to Maria.

Martha is taking one final order for flaming ukulele name tags. Please reach out to her ASAP if you would like one.

T-shirts – If you have not paid for your t-shirt yet please bring the appropriate amount to the next meetup. Tom does not have a delivery date as of yet but he will let us know as soon as he receives that information.  Speaking of Tom,  he started his new job this week. We are hoping that he can find a way to attend some of the weekly practices. Yes we miss you Tom, But don’t let it go to your head.

Susan mentioned that at some point in the near future we are going to have our first annual meeting. It would be part of our regular Wednesday meetup.

The Old-time Radio Club is coming back to the library and will be taking one Wednesday a month away from us. We do not have a time frame yet.  The good news is Jenn, the Children’s Librarian, has offered the use of the open space behind where she sits. We would not be confined to the small room. We would be free to play along the back wall, in between the shelving and wherever we want. She is not concerned at all about the noise.  Apparently she and the other librarians love to hear us play. In fact they were disappointed that we played outside today.  The same space is available for the first Monday of the month if we need it.

This evening was spent practicing songs for the snugfest jamalong. Things seem to go very well with some minor adjustments.

End of the line – End with the cords C G7 C

Thank you Jan for that suggestion.

Wellerman – slow down the song but pronounce the word Wellerman a little quicker.

Freight Train – needs more practice but off to a good start.

By request, Bev graced us with a performance of Birth of the Blues. Well done Bev.

Heart of Gold – Patty demonstratrf the strum. The song needs work but has potential.

Rocky Racoon – fun song to end the night as Susan was picking up.

Lest I not forget Maria’s corner.  This may become a regular part of our meetup. If you remember two weeks ago she showed us the Ode to the Portuguese strum and at the August Mashup demonstrated another strum. I wasn’t in attendance. I don’t know the name of the song but feel free to let me know.

Tonight she showed us a strum and played the song Delilah by Tom Jones. Great job.

Fortunately or unfortunately, this brought up the parody of Delilah that Jack wrote about 3 years ago called Ukulele.  A story about a person who is obsessed with ukuleles. Rumor has it that Kim will be joining him to perform this at the next meetup. That is as long as he’s willing to sing it at a much slower tempo.  Right Kim?

Tonight a number of members stepped up and helped out with the songs. This is what Susan envisioned for SUP and it’s happening.  There is an immense amount of talent in this group . Kudos to all.

Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. This is a judgment-free meetup and who knows you might end up with your own “corner”

I’m sure I forgot something and probably made a couple egregious errors. Susan  please edit as needed.

Goodnight,

Jackukulele
